The Man With The Golden Gun (1974)

Bond (Roger Moore) is called to M’s office where he questions him about his knowledge of Scaramanga (Christopher Lee), aka The Man with the Golden Gun because he uses a gun with gold bullets that has the name of his target on them.  M gives Bond a gold bullet with his name on it which Bond finds baffling.

Bond travels to Beirut where he meets an exotic dancer who has kept the gold bullet that killed her lover, agent 002.  She keeps it in her naval as a good luck charm.  He manages to recover the bullet and takes it back to Q who, with an expert, establishes the manufactures name, Lazar, who is in Macau.  Bond goes there to check him out.  Under duress, Lazar shows Bond a delivery of gold bullets due to be taken to a local casino.  Bond goes with Lazar seeing the bullets collected by Andrea Anders (Maud Adams) Scaramanga’s lover.

Anders goes to Hong Kong, Bond following, but he loses her and meets up with Mary Goodnight (Britt Ekland).  Eventually he discovers where Andrea is staying so he pays her a visit and questions her rather roughly.  She owns up to the fact that she is Scaramanga’s lover and courier.

Later in the evening Bond is watching the Bottoms Up club where Scaramanga is supposed to be visiting.  While waiting he witnesses Scaramanga kill a man called Gibson who is a solar energy expert, but Bond himself is arrested for the murder by a Lieutenant Hip who takes him to the decaying wreck of RMS Queen Elizabeth in Hong Kong harbour.  This, however, is the MI6 Asian Operations Base where M informs Bond that Gibson had invented and device that turned solar energy into electricity, a Solex Agitator, which had been stolen after he was murdered.  A Chinese gangster named Hai Fat (Richard Loo) had hired Scaramanga to carry out the deed so, believing that Hai Fat had never met Scaramanga, Bond set out to meet the gangster impersonating Scaramanga.

On arriving in Bangkok, Hai Fat invites Bond to his house for dinner.  This, however, is a trap because Fat had actually met Scaramanga so when he arrives he is seized by Nick-Nack and two sumo wrestlers.  Bond is made to fight a martial arts expert but wins and escapes through a window.  Lieutenant Hip and his nieces arrive to help Bond but, after beating the students at their own game, leave in Hip’s car but leaving Bond behind who has to use a canal boat to make his escape.

Meanwhile, Scaramanga kills Hai Fat to gain control of his assets.  In the evening Andrea Anders turns up at Bonds room and after sleeping with her she asks Bond to kill Scaramanga because she is frightened of him.  He agrees but only if he can have the Solex Agitator.

He arranges to meet Anders at a kickboxing match but by the time he arrives she has been killed by Scaramanga who had found out about her deception.  As Scaramanga warns Bond to stay away Bond espies the Solex Agitator among the contents of Anders’ purse which has spilt on the floor.  He surreptitiously retrieves it and passes it to Hip who is disguised as a peanut vendor.  He in turn passes it to Goodnight who is waiting outside and who is trying to put a tracking device on Scaramanga’s car.  However, she is caught in the act and bundled into the boot.  Bond gives chase in a stolen car but Scaramanga manages to evade him when his car turns into a plane and he, Nick Nack and Goodnight, who is still in the boot, fly to his private island.

Thanks to the tracking device, MI6 traces Scaramanga’s whereabouts and Bond flies out and is met by Nick Nack and Scaramanga who shows him round, including the Solex Agitator powering his compound.  Scaramanga’s intention is for it to be used as a weapon and proceeds to destroy Bonds sea plane as an example.  He plans to sell it to the highest bidder.

Scaramanga challenges Bond to a duel on the beach but Scaramanga doesn’t play fair and disappears.  In Scaramanga’s Funhouse Bond finds a mannequin in his likeness and replaces it with himself so that when Scaramanga walks past, unaware of the swap, Bond kills him.

Meanwhile Goodnight has overpowered the bodyguard who is guarding her and he falls into liquid nitrogen thus upsetting the balance of the solar plant.  The change in temperature causes the place to self-destruct but not before Bond recovers the Solex and he and Goodnight escape.

They have to use Scaramanga’s junk to escape the island but once on their way they discover that Nick Nack is also on board and attacks Bond.  He is defeated though and Bond locks him in a small cage for the rest of the journey and he and Goodnight resume their romantic rendezvous ignoring a call from M.
